NBA Draft lottery 2021, explained: Updated odds for each team to win the overall first pick

As the few remaining title contenders in the 2021 NBA Playoffs battle for the right to hold the Larry O’Brien Trophy, other teams turn their attention to the league’s annual NBA Draft lottery.

Regardless of which franchise tops the 2021 NBA Draft table, the No.1 selection will likely be Oklahoma State star Cade Cunningham, who has an elite combination of size, shot and ability. There are other great perspectives available beyond Cunningham, however, including Evan Mobley, Jalen Green, and Jalen Suggs.

How does the NBA Draft lottery work?

The NBA Draft Lottery will determine the order of the top four draft picks this year. Once the top four teams are blocked, the rest of the lottery order goes through the reverse regular season record. The actual draw procedure will take place before the ESPN broadcast, and the order of the 2021 NBA Draft will be announced shortly thereafter.

Here is the explanation in Weeds of the Ping Pong Ball Drawing Method, straight from the NBA:

Fourteen ping-pong balls numbered 1 to 14 will be placed in a lottery machine. There are 1001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, regardless of their order of selection. Prior to the lottery, 1,000 of these 1,001 combinations will be awarded to the 14 participating lottery teams. The lottery machine is manufactured by Smart Play Company, one of the leading manufacturers of state lottery machines in the United States. Smart Play also weighs, measures and certifies ping-pong balls before the draw.

The drawing process takes place as follows: the 14 balls are placed in the lottery machine and they are shuffled for 20 seconds, then the first ball is removed. The remaining balls are shuffled in the lottery machine for another 10 seconds, then the second ball is drawn. There is a 10 second mix, then the third ball is drawn. There is a 10 second mix, then the fourth ball is drawn. The team that received this combination will receive choice # 1. The same process is repeated with the same ping-pong balls and the same lottery machine for the second to fourth choice.

If the same team shows up more than once, the result is rejected and another four-ball combination is selected. Additionally, if the only unassigned combination is drawn, the result is rejected and the balls are drawn again. The amount of time the balls are mixed is controlled by a timer who faces the machine and signals the machine operator once the appropriate time has elapsed.
