Alexei Navalny came to the penal colony of the Vladimir region to serve the prison sentence he was sentenced for fraud there. According to the head of the prison services, he poses “no threat to his life or his health”.
Russian opponent Alexei Navalny is in an area 200 kilometers east of Moscow to be transferred to a penal colony to serve his sentence, a state body informed on February 28, 2021.
“Alexeï Navalny arrived in an establishment of the Russian penitentiary services of the region of Vladimir to carry out his sentence”, indicated in a statement the public commission of monitoring of Moscow (ONK).
ONK Secretary General Alexei Melnikov told Russian news agency Interfax that Alexey Navalny, sentenced to two and a half years in prison, would first be placed in quarantine before being transferred to the one of the settlements in the region.
According to sources interviewed by the TASS and RIA Novosti agencies, the opponent will be transferred to the No. 2 prison colony located in the small town of Pokrov, in the Vladimir region of European Russia.
According to the media, this colony is of the “normal regime” type, meaning that the conditions of detention are less severe. It accommodates around 800 prisoners.
On February 26, the head of the Russian prison services, Alexander Kalashnikov, assured that Alexeï Navalny “was transferred to the place where he is supposed to be by court decision” and that he does not weigh “any threat to his life or health ”.
The opponent “will carry out his sentence under absolutely normal conditions”, he said, assuring that “Alexeï Navalny, if he wishes, will take part in production activities”.
Russian justice last week confirmed his conviction in a fraud case dating from 2014.
