Native Trail cut for 2000 Guineas after Craven win | Race News

Outpost of the 2000 Guineas, favorite Native Trail maintained their unbeaten record with a comfortable win in the bet365 Craven Stakes at Newmarket.

Winner in each of his four starts last season, culminating in Group One verdicts in the National Stakes and Dewhurst, Native Trail was crowned Europe’s best juvenile and was kicked out as the 1-4 favorite on his reappearance.

Partnered with William Buick, Native Trail settled into fourth as Star Of India set the pace at the start and it had even more in front of it than behind it halfway through.

Buick finally gave the signal inside the final two stages, but the response was far from instantaneous, with Native Trail taking a while to really hit top speed before finally picking up speed as it encountered the rising terrain.

Charlie Appleby’s charge galloped in style to head home well away from a 12-1 shot at Claymore, with Betfair taking it 2-1 from 9-4 for the Colts’ Classic return to Newmarket on April 30 .
