Nancy Pelosi says her initial reaction to the start of the Capitol riot was “Let me take them”

house tenant Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was ready to fight for democracy…literally.

The 82-year-old congresswoman was questioned Monday at Senator Barbara Boxer’s annual lecture at the University of California, Berkeley, what she was thinking ‘when it became clear the police had lost control’ during the US Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

“Regarding the assault on the Capitol, democracy and the Constitution…what was going through my mind? Being raised in an all-boy family…I was like, ‘Let me do them,'” Pelosi said. “But security didn’t have the same thought, and they just took me off the podium.”

She continued: “I said, ‘No, no, I can handle it,’ because sometimes they act, they do nasty things verbally and all that in Congress. And I said, ‘I can handle it,’ and [security] said, ‘No, it’s different.’

Pelosi pointed out that the “traumatic effect” the insurgents had on “the members, the staff, the people in charge of the maintenance of the Capitol” was something that she could “never forgive them”.

“I tell you, it had it all: there was racism, there was sexism, there was anti-Semitism…. The things they said, the things they did – again, the assault on our democracy – at the instigation of the President of the United States.

That day, thousands of supporters of Donald Trump, who had lost his bid for a second term in the White House, marched to the US Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress and Vice President Mike Pence from certifying the Electoral College vote tally for Democrat Joe Biden. The crowd had been buoyed by Trump, who had just held a nearby rally in which the 2020 election was “stolen” from him, even though he lost by 7 million votes.

Pelosi, who was frequently attacked by Trump during his presidency, was a primary target for the attackers. Rioters called her by name as they searched the halls of the Capitol. One man stole her desk while another stormed into her office, sat down at her desk, took a picture and left her a note calling her a “bitch”.
