Naftogaz plans to withdraw from gas imports in the next heating season | ukraine news

Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC is making every effort to withdraw from natural gas imports as of the next heating season, for the first time in Ukraine’s independent history.

The relevant statement was made by Naftogaz Group CEO Oleksiy Chernyshov during a meeting with the director of the Energy Community Secretariat (ECS) Artur Lorkowski, reports an Ukrinform correspondent, referring to the Naftogaz group.

“One of our priorities today is also to restore the proper functioning of the gas market in Ukraine. We are working proactively to increase national production, thanks to the efforts of the Naftogaz group and private producers who should benefit from appropriate conditions. Ukraine is preparing for various scenarios to get through the next heating season. At the same time, the Naftogaz team is doing its best to do without gas imports this year, for the first time in Ukraine’s independent history,” Chernyshov said.

In his own words, Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities are the largest in Europe, and their resources can become a pillar of support for EU energy security.

“We would also be very grateful if the ESC could use its mechanisms to promote the use of Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities by market players. In particular, by raising awareness among future gas suppliers within the gas supply platform,” Chernyshov noted.

As a reminder, Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC plans to increase natural gas production to 1 billion cubic meters and develop 12 new wells in western Ukraine in 2023.
