MSNBC host Joy Reid’s latest attack on Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., had the liberal anchor claiming he was “getting” followers like a civil rights-era lynching mob.
Reid spoke with journalist and author Adam Serwer about DeSantis sending migrants to Martha’s Vineyard on Sept. 14, which she described as “cruel, sadistic” and “possibly criminal.” Reid also referred to various other eye-catching actions of DeSantis in the media and condemned him as a “retro” 1960s segregationist politician.
“I mean, yelling at kids because they’re wearing masks to protect themselves. Suing cruise lines because they would dare to try and stop Covid from getting on ships with passengers. The things he does don’t have no political priorities. They definitely, to me, sound more like the 1960s era that stirs up a crowd at the University of Mississippi because James Meredith comes along and cheers him on as four people are killed in that crowd. I feel like he’s that kind of retro politician,” Reid said.
The mob Reid was referring to was the 1962 Ole Miss riot where segregationists opposed the enlistment of African-American veteran James Meredith. More than 300 people were injured in the riot, including several law enforcement officers.

Reid also referenced lynchings while quoting Serwer’s book “The Cruelty Is The Point”, saying they are a “horrible American tradition”.
“And you talk about it, the lynchings were like a party and it was the act of being cruel together. It wasn’t just doing violence, but it was the license to do violence and the license to do violence together, so there’s this horrible American tradition,” Reid said.
Multiple outlets have frequently and repeatedly attacked DeSantis for moving migrants to the liberal enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, with many calling him “cruel” and “inhumane.” Democratic pundits and politicians have also called for DeSantis to be investigated and arrested for what they called “human trafficking.”

Reid has also repeatedly lambasted the Florida governor, often calling him a racist “authoritarian.” In August, she accused DeSantis of creating a white nationalist movement through his efforts to fight critical race theory.
In April, she suggested on her Twitter account that DeSantis having black children behind him in a photo constituted “child abuse.”

“This misuse of black boys amounts to child abuse. I would really love to hear the story of these kids and how they ended up at a DeSantis event. Given how anti-black DeSantis is, using black kids like this is even sicker,” Reid wrote.
