Ms World, reigning, arrested after removing her crown from Ms Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) – Police in Sri Lanka on Thursday arrested reigning Ms World for ripping the crown from Ms Sri Lanka’s beauty pageant winner’s head and allegedly causing injuries. She was then released on bail.

Caroline Jurie, who won the Ms World 2020 competition, has been accused of injuring Pushpika De Silva, who won Ms Sri Lanka’s title in a televised competition held in Colombo on Sunday.

Moments after De Silva won the title, Jurie, who is also Sri Lankan, took the stage and snatched the crown from her, claiming she was not eligible because she was divorced. Jurie then presented the crown to the first finalist, declaring that she was the winner.

In a statement on his Facebook page, De Silva denied having a divorce.

“Being apart is one. Divorce is something else. I am still an undivided woman, ”she wrote.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said police received a complaint from De Silva that she was injured when her crown was removed.

Rohana said Jurie and a model, Chula Padmendra, were arrested Thursday for “simple injury and criminal force” and were subsequently released on bail. The two women were ordered to appear in court on April 19.

Jurie declined to comment upon leaving the police station.

The incident at Sunday’s show, which the Prime Minister’s wife attended, sparked a huge uproar in the Indian Ocean island nation. On Monday, the contest organizers said they would return the crown to De Silva.
