Ms World arrested for allegedly injuring Ms Sri Lanka after ripping crown from her head on stage

Police arrested Caroline Jurie, the winner of Ms World 2020, after allegedly injuring another contestant during the Beauty contest Ms. Sri Lanka on Sunday.

During the ceremony, which was broadcast on national television, Jurie, who won Ms. Sri Lanka in 2019 and won the title of Ms. World, took the crown from 2021 winner Pushpika De Silva. Jurie claimed that De Silva could not win Ms. Sri Lanka over because she was divorced.

The contest organizer and De Silva later confirmed that she was still married. De Silva also posted about the incident on Facebook, claiming that she suffered head pain when the crown was pulled off her head and was treated for injuries, according to BBC News.

De Silva also said she would take legal action for the “unreasonable and insulting” way she was treated.

Police are said to have questioned Jurie and Chandimal Jayasinghe, the national director of Ms. Sri Lanka World, about the incident, according to BBC News.

Now two people have been arrested, police spokesman Ajith Rohana told BBC News. “Police arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Padmendra in Sunday’s incident on charges of simple injury and felony,” Rohana said.

Jurie and Chula Padmendra are due in court on April 19.

After winning the crown, Jurie had placed it on the head of the first runner-up, but De Silva has now been returned, contest organizers have said. They also expect Jurie to issue a public apology.

“We are disappointed,” Jayasinghe told BBC News after the incident. “It was a shame how Caroline Jurie performed on stage and Ms. World’s organization has already started an investigation into this.”
