MPs respond to cows escaped in residential Pico-Rivera, kill 1

A small herd of cows somehow broke loose and wandered into a residential area of Pico-Rivera on Tuesday night.

At around 7:35 p.m., authorities received reports of around 20 cows in Beverly Road and Durfee Avenue, according to Tracy Koerner, deputy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Media images showed the cows gathering calmly around 9 p.m. in a cul-de-sac.

At some point in the night, Koerner said, the cows started loading and one was shot dead by law enforcement. He said he didn’t know what or against whom they charged.

Koerner said MPs were trying to keep the cows together and the department’s mounted police force had been called in to try and load the cows onto a horse trailer.

“The deputies stand in front, keeping the animals contained,” he said.

Koerner said he could not yet provide information on where the cows escaped.
