MPs kill man on Highway 215 after Riverside County chase

A man who authorities said was armed and wanted was gunned down by lawmakers on Tuesday as he tried to escape on foot on Highway 215 in Menifee after a confrontation involving the U.S. Border Patrol and the Sheriff’s Department of Riverside County.

Plainclothes Border Patrol officers driving unmarked vehicles and working on routine patrol at around 4:40 p.m. spotted a man identified in a lethal assault in Ventura County, Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. . Deanna Pecoraro said in a press release.

Officers followed the man for several minutes as he drove south on Highway 15 near Lake Elsinore before exiting and parking at a gas station, where they confronted him, Pecoraro said .

When officers attempted to take the man into custody, he drove his vehicle towards them, hitting two patrol cars as he fled, the statement said. The border patrol then enlisted the help of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop the driver about 10 minutes later in Temecula, according to an incident report, but the man rushed off.

As he headed north on Highway 215, the man stopped his car near the central median, just south of Ethanac Road, according to the report. He then got out of the vehicle armed with a handgun and began to flee on foot, authorities said, jumping over the center median and running down the southbound lanes of the highway.

Two deputies shot the man, who was not identified, according to Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Albert Martinez. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries, officials said.

The cause of the shooting was not immediately clear, according to the report, and a spokesperson for the sheriff declined to comment further.

The names of the deputies involved in the shooting were not disclosed. Both have been placed on administrative leave, as per department policy, Martinez said.
