Oslo is deliberately stoking tensions by raising its military alert level, the Russian Foreign Ministry says
Norway’s decision to put its armed forces on heightened alert amid the Ukrainian conflict and Moscow’s standoff with the West is “unprecedented,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday, adding that any hostile action by Oslo would not go unanswered.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Zakharova noted that this decision would not have caused any problems in Moscow, except for a “important detail.”
“Basically, such an unprecedented step is justified – as you can easily guess – by the actions of Russia, which ’caused the most serious security policy situation in Europe'”, she says.
Denying this allegation, Zakharova insisted that it was the West that was responsible for the tensions with Moscow. “It was caused by your actions, not ours… It was you who destabilized the situation on the European continent.”
The spokeswoman went on to warn that while Moscow was willing to have a conversation based on mutual respect, it would also respond to any “hostile” steps by Oslo.
She also denounced what she described as attempts to “Boosting the threat from the East, smearing our country and attributing things to it that it does not do” by Norway. In doing so, the spokeswoman explained, Oslo was trying “to disguise his own aspirations in terms of military preparations.”
Zakharova added that Russia sees these actions near its borders as Norway’s attempt to “deliberately following destructive policies” supposed “to stir up regional tensions”.
Zakharova’s comments came after Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store announced that Oslo had raised the readiness level of its armed forces from phase 0 – a normal situation – to phase 1 on Monday. Explaining the decision, the Prime Minister claimed that Norway had found itself “in the most serious security policy situation in recent decades”, while warning that since Russia is now “experience great resistance” on the ground in Ukraine, Moscow could be “use other means” in his military campaign.
