The Federal Service for the Supervision of Communications and Information Technology (Roskomnadzor) has issued multiple warnings to companies like Apple and Google, as well as to VPN service providers Cloudflare and Cisco, on the grounds that these companies are violating the laws election campaign: “During the pre-election campaign, it is prohibited to allow violations of Russian law, including that related to the election campaign on the Internet.”

These statements by Russian authorities come as Facebook and Twitter were sentenced on September 14 by the Moscow court to further fines for refusing to remove content deemed illegal by the country’s law. The two digital giants were fined 21 million rubles (245,000 euros) for Facebook and 5 million rubles (58,200 euros) for Twitter.

In July, Sergei Lavrov said the parliamentary elections could be subject to possible foreign interference, while the polls will begin on September 17. “Our Western colleagues do not hide the fact that many of them would prefer to deal with a weak Russia, devoid of benchmarks, a Russia ready to make any concessions.
