Morel hits the first pitch of the game, but it’s mostly downhill for the Cubs afterward as they lose to the Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) –Cedric Mullins and Trey Mancini hit back-to-back homers, triggering a surge that carried the Baltimore Orioles past the Chicago Cubs 9-3 on a rainy Tuesday night.

Jorge Mateo, Austin Hays and Ramón Urías also connected for the Orioles, who beat the Cubs for the first time in seven tries since 2008.

Reliever Bryan Baker (2-3) picked up the win after allowing a run and a hit in 1 1/3 innings.

Christopher Morel hit the first pitch of the game against rookie Kyle Bradish and hit base safely in 21 straight games to start his career, extending his Cubs record. Morel also had a triple RBI in the sixth.

The Orioles responded in the bottom half when Mullins started with a home run and Mancini was connected on the following pitch by Keegan Thompson (6-1).

It was the first time the Orioles and their opponent had homered since Aug. 19, 2016, when Houston’s George Springer and Baltimore’s Adam Jones accomplished the feat.

Mateo’s three-point shot on Thompson in the second gave Baltimore a 5-1 lead.

Thompson entered the game having allowed just three home runs in 12 games (45.1 innings) this season.

Baltimore extended the lead to 7-1 in the third on a double from Hays and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Mountcastle.

After Willson Contreras cut the margin to 7-2 with another home run in fifth, Hays answered in the bottom half with Alec Mills’ seventh home run that went 464 feet, the longest home run in a Orioles player this season.

Urías homered in this sxith.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde faces the Cubs for the first time since leaving his coaching staff to become Orioles manager in December 2018. Hyde is friends with Chicago manager David Ross, among others .

“It’s going to be nice to see some familiar faces, but yeah, it’s definitely a little weird seeing the Cubs uniform,” Hyde said.
