More than $3.5 billion sits in Illinois coffers, awaiting return to rightful owners – NBC Chicago

A Chicago family says they nearly walked away from more than $6,500 in unclaimed funds left behind by their late father after years of failed attempts to get it from the state treasurer’s office from Illinois.

Three decades after the death of their late father, the family had found his name on a long list of unclaimed Illinois homeowners.

About two years after starting the process of getting their father’s money back, his daughter says it was the hardest she’s ever had working for money, and she found the process riddled with unnecessary obstacles.

The Illinois Treasurer’s Office defends its demands, saying it must enforce rigorous standards to combat fraud.

Are these standards too complicated when dealing with heirs of a long-deceased relative? NBC 5 Responds gets answers. Watch the full story above.
