More than 1,000 London police officers currently suspended over allegations of racism, misogyny and homophobia

LONDON (AP) — London police say more than 1,000 officers are currently suspended or placed on restricted duties as the department steps up efforts to weed out bad cops following a scathing report that found that was institutionally racist, homophobic and misogynistic.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner Stuart Cundy said it would take years for the Metropolitan Police Service to get rid of officers who broke standards or were not properly vetted before they were hired, with around 60 officers doing the subject to disciplinary hearings every month.

“It’s going to take one, two or more years to root out the corrupt,” Cundy said in a statement released Tuesday.

The figures were released a year after Commissioner Mark Rowley took charge of the Met, pledging to reform a force which had been rocked by a series of scandals, including the arrest of a serving officer for the kidnapping and murder of a young woman.

In March, police apologized after an independent review found the department had lost public trust due to deep-rooted racism, misogyny and homophobia.

The force has around 34,000 officers. Figures show 201 people are suspended and around 860 are subject to restrictions.
