(WXIN) – For the first time in a decade, the M&M’s range is getting bigger. Fans can now welcome Purple, the candy’s first female peanut character, into the fold.
According to candy maker Mars, Incorporated, Purple is meant to “represent acceptance and inclusivity.”
“Self-awareness, authenticity, and confidence are the drivers of Purple’s charm and quirky nature,” the company states. “She joins the legendary cast of M&M characters, who were recently refreshed with updated looks and more nuanced personalities in January.”
Described as a permanent addition to the lineup of characters, Purple is featured in a new music video and single titled “I’m Just Gonna Be Me”.
The musical collaboration includes the rest of the M&M’s team with saxophonist Grace Kelly, masters of dance and choreography Devin Santiago and Colo Cag, and opera singer Anthony Roth Costanzo.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of the track will go to Sing for Hope, a non-profit organization that “harnesses the power of the arts to bring hope, connection and purpose to millions of people around the world through the music,” the company said.
Purple joins a range of M&M’s that already includes red, orange, brown, blue, green and of course yellow – its companion peanut M&Ms.
