MMA fighter Willem Smith suffers horrific leg snap at EFC 92

It’s hard to watch.

MMA fighter Willem Smith – aka “The Viking” – suffered a horrific leg injury during his fight with Ivan Strydom at Extreme Fighting Championship 92 on Saturday.

In the first round of the fight in Johannesburg, South Africa, Smith’s right leg broke after kicking his opponent. He went to step back on the same leg and fell when it bent and collapsed under him.

Smith lay on the floor of the octagon as his right foot dangled in the air and his bone protruded from his leg.

Strydom stopped as Smith kicked and stopped fighting when he noticed his opponent had been seriously injured. The referee was quick to suspend the fight when Smith’s leg “broke”, according to an announcer on the show.

Smith seemed to be in good spirits after his injury. EFC shared a photo on Twitter of the fighter on a stretcher, giving the thumbs up to the camera. An IV bag appeared to be on her lap.

He was pictured shaking hands with fellow South African Garreth McLellan.

EFC also tweeted close-up photos of Smith’s leg injury which showed his foot bending in the opposite direction.
