Ministry of Health approves the third dose for people over 18 years of age in Colombia

This Tuesday, November 23, the Colombian Ministry of Health approved the third dose of the vaccine against covid-19 for the population between 18 and 49 years in the national territory with the purpose of reinforcing the immunization of the elderly in the country.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz, who pointed out that the application of the booster dose will be carried out through the stages of the National Vaccination Plan that will begin this Wednesday, which were approved by the Committee. Vaccine Advisor.

“This reinforcement complements the decisions already taken to reinforce the population over 50 years of age. The application will be made six months after the second dose or single dose for each citizen of the country, and will be progressively as the different stages of the National Vaccination Plan have been completed.”Said the portfolio manager, Fernando Ruiz.

This decision, taken by the Ministry of Health in relation to the available scientific evidence, contemplates that those of legal age who completed their vaccination schedule will be able to approach the IPS and the vaccination points, after fulfilling the established time, to receive the booster dose.

Likewise, he pointed out that the third dose of the vaccine against covid-19 has been shown to increase the immune response in adults and the effectiveness of the biological one against contagion, transmission and serious complications derived from the virus, especially in the face of the appearance of more variants. contagious.

“The Vaccine Advisory Committee recommended for this third dose the use of heterologous platforms, that is, platforms different from those administered in the initial scheme”, Explained Minister Ruiz, who assured that despite the low impact, a fourth peak of the pandemic is not ruled out.

He also indicated that to date, 67.1% of the population in the country already has the first dose of the biological against covid-19, however, he called for accelerating immunization in order to reach 90 % in the shortest time possible to substantially reduce risks.

According to the decision of the Advisory Committee, it was established that the opening for the booster dose will take place from November 24 for stages one and two; from December 21 for stage three; stage four will begin on January 18, 2022; and stage five of vaccination will take place from February 16, 2022.

For those vaccinated abroad, this will apply if:

-It is part of the stage of the National Vaccination Plan with provision to date for booster doses, currently being stages 1 and 2.

-In children under 50 years of age, if six months have passed after completing their vaccination schedule.
