Milwaukee County Zoo beloved polar bear dies

Snow Lilly was 36

A beloved polar bear at the Milwaukee County Zoo had to be euthanized on Friday due to declining health. Snow Lilly arrived in Milwaukee in 2005 from the Bronx Zoo. The zoo said she enjoys swimming in her pool and bouncing a large rubber ball at the bottom of the pool like a basketball. Snow Lilly was 36, the oldest polar bear in human care in North America. Due to her advanced age, Snow Lilly underwent a welfare checkup by zoo vets and animal care staff on September 23. Under anesthesia, specialist veterinarians checked and assessed his general state of health. The first results showed heart disease and age-related changes. “Snow Lilly was a favorite with zoo visitors and considered one of the iconic animals of the population,” Milwaukee County Zoo Director Amos Morris said in a press release. “She will be sadly missed by staff and visitors.” Apples, peanut butter, and molasses were on her list of favorite treats, and the zoo and keepers celebrated their milestone birthdays with “birthday cakes” filled with fish, Jell-O, and trail mix.
