Mikel Arteta coached his Arsenal players with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ playing in the background ahead of their clash with Liverpool at Anfield last season.
Arteta has implemented the idea of trying to help his players prepare for the atmosphere on Merseyside, and footage from the session features in episode three of Arsenal’s All or Nothing documentary – which starts at premiering this week on Amazon Prime Video.
In the episode in question, Arteta is seen talking to a member of staff before the session and asks him to get cables for the speakers, who are then positioned around the pitch and yelling “You’ll never walk alone” as Arsenal players. form.
“One of my crazy ideas. Today they are going to train in the background with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’,” Arteta explains in the documentary before the training session.
“Boys, we are mentally starting to play the game now. We’re at Anfield, let’s go.
Arsenal then lost the game 4-0 and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale does not believe the training tactic will be used again.
“I’ve never experimented with speakers before,” he said. “I don’t think they will come back!”
“We could all see what the method was. It’s one of those stadiums that if he gets past you it might be too much, but his team talks are definitely different.
“I think he keeps it fresh because sometimes he writes, sometimes he talks, sometimes he lets certain guys talk and so on.
“It keeps you engaged and also lets you into his life. There’s new things we’ve found out about him in the last year that you’ll never find out unless he’s probably writing a book or something, so before the games I feel very involved in this he says.
