New House Speaker Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) previously lambasted Twitter for acting as an “affiliate of the FBI” in the years before Elon Musk took over the company.
Rep. Johnson, who won the speaker’s gavel without opposition from Republicans, made the comments during a hearing on the Twitter files in March. At the time, Breitbart News highlighted his comments as one of the notable moments of the hearing. As Speaker of the House, Rep. Johnson will now be well-positioned to propose measures to curb censorship of American voices online – and block legislation that would make the problem worse, like the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA).
“The federal government, from Democratic members of Congress to intelligence agencies to the FBI, has used Twitter and other social media companies to censor the speech of Americans. If the alarm bells don’t go off, then you’re not paying attention,” Rep. Johnson said during the hearing, which included testimony from Twitter Files reporter Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger.
“The communication between Twitter and the FBI – it was contained, it was pervasive. Twitter was essentially a subsidiary of the FBI before Elon Musk took over.
“Twitter was engaged in open sharing of information with the intelligence community, and we now know that numerous intelligence agencies were apparently involved in this. The FBI pressured Twitter to take action on election-related tweets leading up to the 2022 election…and Twitter dutifully censored the content.
Before becoming Speaker, Rep. Johnson was a member of the House Judiciary Committee, which, under the leadership of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), created a Select Committee on Militarization of the Federal Government to investigate collusion between federal agencies and big tech companies. to censor Americans. It was during a session of this select committee that Representative Johnson exposed the collusion between the FBI and Twitter.
“Twitter used its internal tools to control and manipulate speech considered to be disinformation. And who determined this? They were the government bureaucrats.
“Documents show that Twitter used visibility filtering to restrict certain accounts and posts and completely remove people from the platform. The Twitter Files should be a matter of bipartisan concern for every member of Congress and every American citizen, because it is a fundamental principle of our constitutional system that the government cannot decide what speech is acceptable or true.
“Americans have the right to express themselves freely, whether or not their speech disrupts the preferred narrative. In fact, that’s when he needs protection the most. The American people cannot and should not rely on “experts” to arbiter the truth, on “disinformation” committees, etc.”
