Next month marks the 30th anniversary of Michael Schumacher’s F1 debut.

Schumacher was little known on the world stage when the then 22-year-old rising sports car star was propelled into the F1 spotlight in August 1991.

His first test drive in Jordan’s car came at Silverstone a week before that year’s Belgian GP, where he immediately impressed team management and made his racing debut.

The German rider then made a name for himself by qualifying seventh a week later at Spa-Francorchamps, a circuit he had never driven before.

Although he quickly dropped out of the race due to a clutch issue, Schumacher had made a huge impression and in the next race at Monza, in what remains one of the most sudden team exchanges and F1’s most controversial, he was competing for Benetton. Reaching the podium at the start of the following season, he won his first of 91 Grands Prix on his return to Belgium a year after an extraordinary debut.

Almost exactly 30 years later, the Jordan in green livery from that 1991 season was back on track in the heart of British motorsport, this time in Mick’s hands in the middle of his rookie F1 season with Haas.

Schumacher, the defending F2 champion and Ferrari-backed youth, has quietly impressed the back-grid machines so far this season and has overqualified his teammate Nikita Mazepin in every session he has completed.

The full feature film, in which Mick and Karun each drove the car, will air on Sky F1 during the Belgian GP, the first race after the summer break. This season continues next weekend at the Hungarian GP live on Sky in Budapest before the sport enters a period of shutdown.

Vettel visits Mick

Nostalgia for the Schumacher shoot did not escape another famous German driver in action at Silverstone on the same day.

Testing Pirelli’s 2022 with Aston Martin two days after the British GP, Sebastian Vettel jumped his head into the garage to catch up with compatriot Mick, whom he effectively serves as a mentor.

Schumacher Snr played a similar role for Vettel, their careers intersected on the grid for three years when the seven-time champion returned to F1 in 2010-12. Vettel idolized Schumacher as a child and the couple later forged a friendship as the young German rose through the ranks of F1.
