Michigan teen stabs mother to death during argument and flees

A 15-year-old girl in Detroit, Michigan fatally stabbed her mother during an argument outside their home, police say.

The two men were arguing with knives Thursday when the victim’s father arrived and witnessed the incident, Detroit police said. The 41-year-old victim was rushed to hospital by his father.

The mother had suffered stab wounds to the neck and chest and would succumb to her injuries.

The teenage daughter fled the scene after the stabbing but later turned herself in to police.

“What we do know is that there was an argument and there were knives in the equation,” Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis told reporters, according to FOX. 2. “She left the scene immediately after the incident, however, the family was very helpful in getting her to surrender.”

McGinnis said the teenager suffered minor injuries in the altercation as she and her mother were armed with knives.

“I have incredible grief for the whole family because you now have a 15-year-old daughter who was involved in the most traumatic event imaginable,” McGinnis said.

The teenager was taken to Detroit Juvenile Detention Center for questioning, although it is unclear whether she will face charges. The incident could be a case of self-defense.

“It could be a situation where there’s mutual combativeness, it’s going to be a tough case for the prosecutor to look at,” McGinnis said.

According to the police, neither the mother nor her daughter have a criminal record or a history of mental health problems. McGinnis said the argument was a typical disagreement between parents and children.

“I would just ask everyone if you’re engaged in an argument, leave the guns out,” he said. “The healing this family will have to go through for years is unimaginable.”
