Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib wins Democratic primary race

NEW YORK (AP) — Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat and member of the progressive congressional team, rode through a primary election on Tuesday.

His victory came as three Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives who voted to impeach Donald Trump in the January 6 uprising faced major challenges from rivals endorsed by the former president.

The primaries of Representatives Peter Meijer, Jaime Herrera Beutler and Dan Newhouse are the biggest test yet for GOP incumbents who broke with Trump after a crowd of his supporters stormed the US Capitol in a bid to to keep him in power. Trump has vowed revenge on the 10 House Republicans who crossed party lines for the impeachment vote.

Of the 10, four chose not to run in this year’s midterm elections. As for those who did, Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina lost to a Trump-endorsed challenger in June, while Rep. David Valadao of California survived a challenge the same month from a fellow Republican, qualifying for the general elections. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming is bracing for defeat in her Aug. 16 primary against a Trump-backed rival.

In other races on Tuesday, Rep. Haley Stevens ousted Rep. Andy Levin from Congress after winning their Democratic primary in Michigan. Another of Tlaib’s Squad colleagues, Missouri Rep. Cori Bush, won her Democratic primary, and Arizona, a leading figure in the QAnon conspiracy movement was trailing badly in her Republican primary.
