Has Michael van Gerwen lost his aura of invincibility? Sky Sports analysts Wayne Mardle and Mark Webster believe the chasing pack is no longer afraid to take on ‘Mighty Mike’.

The five-time Premier League champion appeared to be back to his best on the competition’s second night at Liverpool on Thursday.

Van Gerwen dismantled world champion Peter Wright 6-1 in the quarter-finals with a superb average of 103.

But despite increasing that performance to an average of 105 in a thrilling semi-final against defending champion Jonny Clayton, he left the Welshman with a 4-1 advantage, dropping five straight sets to crash out.

“He’s not as ruthless, he’s not as confident and he’s lost that aura”

Van Gerwen has long been the dominant force on the darts planet, holding the world No. 1 position from 2014-2021 and winning the world championship in 2014, 2017 and 2019.

But ‘The Green Machine’ hasn’t won a TV title since winning its sixth The Players Championship Finals crown in November 2020.

mardle said sky sports: “When you lose, like MVG, it’s horrible because you come here, you’re all alone and you can’t just pass the ball to the wing and be done with it and I hope someone another short with , it’s not like that. I’m more afraid for Michael van Gerwen than for the others.

“The panic right now seems to be coming from MVG and no one else.”

Webster believes the “aura” surrounding Van Gerwen’s dominance has suffered a decline over the past two years.

“It clearly is,” said the former Lakeside champ. “He hasn’t won a major title for nearly 15 months now and he lost to a player who was averaging around 88 on the weekend (he suffered a third-round loss to associate member Stephen Burton at Players Championship 2 at Barnsley).

“It’s no disrespect to this player, but when you get away with playing like that, it’s Michael van Gerwen.

“Players aren’t afraid of him anymore, he’s not so ruthless anymore, he’s not so confident anymore and he’s lost that aura. He needs to get it back because he’s not world number 1 anymore.

“I think he needs a major win and then he’ll do it again or just something to hang on to, because the minute he looks nervous, pissed off, everything he does seems sometimes a bit difficult, but that could change everything.”
