Michael Brind’Amour resigns as chair of Hockey Canada’s board of directors

Hockey Canada Chairman of the Board, Michael Brind’Amour, announced that he resign from his posteffective immediately.

The resignation comes following numerous controversies with Hockey Canada. In recent months, the organization has come under fire for two sexual assault cases that have come to light involving Canadian teams from the 2003 and 2018 World Juniors. As a result, they faced multiple hearings before the Standing Heritage Committee Canadian, during which we learned of their incompetence throughout the process of handling these files.

Brind’Amour released a statement with the announcement, saying:

“I have listened carefully and attentively to the comments of Canadians on the culture of our sport and our organization, as well as our actions and our leadership. I understand that the steps we have taken in recent weeks are part of the solution.

My last term ends in November 2022 and I know there is no need to wait for a new era. Immediate action is essential to address the significant challenges facing our organization and our sport, which our action plan aims to accomplish. I would not be able to carry out this renewal and I therefore announced my resignation to the Board of Directors.

I am reassured that the Honorable Thomas Cromwell, CC, has agreed to lead a review of the governance of our organization which will help us to make the necessary changes. I am confident that the recommendations will guide the organization into a future of desired change.

I wish the best of success to those who will follow me.

Hockey Canada said in a statement that they will meet and appoint an interim president in the coming days, with the next board election scheduled for November.

This could be the first of many resignations in the coming months.
