Mexican authorities reported light earthquake in Puerto Peñasco

The Center for Instrumentation and Seismic Registration of Mexico (Cires) reported an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter scale near Puerto Peñasco, being 02:26 in local time (08:26 UTC). With a depth of 14 kilometers, it was perceived as light by the residents of the town.

Still there is no news regarding the victims and material damage that has caused this earthquake.

Mexico stands out as one of the North American countries with the most seismic activity. In popular memory, the events of 1985 and 2017 stand out above all, movements that caused devastation in their territory. Despite being the most remembered, they were not the largest since modern times.

The March 28, 1787, the strongest earthquake recorded in the country occurred. Oaxaca, then the central point of the Spanish colony, was the victim of a movement of 8.6 on the Richter scale. That event was so impetuous that it was followed by a tsunami that reached 6 kilometers inland.

In 2009, the Center for Instrumentation and Seismic Registration (Cires) carried out a study to further investigate the events of 1787. It was then suggested that an event with a force greater than 8.6 degrees may occur soon. The epicenter is believed to be located in the region between the Mexican and Central American coasts. It should be noted that the area, known as the Guerrero Gap, has geological antecedents that support this hypothesis.

Earthquakes like the one on this day bring to the memory of Mexicans worst memories of 1985 and 2017, when all of Mexico City was paralyzed before the shocking consequences that each one left.

The one of September 19, 1985 occurred at 7:19 local time (13:19 GMT) with a magnitude of 8.2 Richter and with an epicenter in the state of Guerrero. Since that earthquake, many thought that something like this would not happen again. But it happened again exactly 32 years later.

That of 2017 was registered at 1:14 p.m. local time (18:30 GMT) with an epicenter on the limits of the states of Puebla and Morelos and left a balance of 369 deaths in the center of the country.
