Metaplatforms will begin fully encrypting messages on Facebook and Instagram by default, moving forward with a privacy measure that government officials and others say could hide the illegal activities of child predators and others criminals.
The social media giant will this week begin automatically steering Facebook users to what’s called end-to-end encryption of their messages, according to people familiar with the matter, with the change rolling out over the weeks. Direct messages on Instagram will also move to this encryption by default sometime later, likely in the new year, they said.
