Diana Taurasi entered the all-time top 10 in WNBA games played in Mercury’s 2021 season opener on Friday night.
And once again, the 17-year veteran played her longtime team hero.
As time ticked by in the fourth quarter and Taurasi’s Mercury lagged behind the Lynx, Phoenix pulled off a critical steal. Taurasi caught a pass in the frontcourt and drained a 3-point green light with time frozen on the clock.
Ultimately, officials determined there was 1.1 seconds left after Taurasi’s shot dropped. The Mercury held on as that last second bled to a 77-75 victory.
Taurasi finished the game with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
His third winner was not the only one to fall on the first night of the season. Former No.1 selection Sabrina Ionescu struck with 0.4 seconds left to give Liberty a victory over Fever in the league’s opener of the season.
