Matt Jones has been the reigning Australian Open champion since he was last staged in 2019

The men’s and women’s Australian Open golf tournaments have been canceled due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Golf Australia had already postponed this year’s men’s event in Sydney from November to the end of January or February, while the 2022 women’s tournament was due to be played in Adelaide in February.

Australia’s borders are effectively closed and unlikely to open to non-residents until 2022, while the two-week isolation prevents the country’s top players from returning from US and European tours to support the domestic game.

“The decision was not taken lightly, but we believe it is the right result under the current circumstances,” said James Sutherland, Managing Director of Golf Australia.

“The international element means that the quarantine and travel restrictions are wreaking havoc in the planning and, with our top players living abroad, the challenge is even greater.”

The Men’s Australian Open, previously won by Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Rory McIlroy, was also called off in 2020 for the first time since 1945.

The 2022 edition will be held at Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne in November-December, before returning to The Australian in 2023

Matt Jones has been the reigning Australian Open champion since its last edition in 2019, while Inbee Park won her 20th LPGA Tour title at the Australian Open Women’s in February 2020.

Golf Australia has said it still intends to host the Vic Open February 10-13, albeit without international sanction.

The tournament, the only one on professional golf circuits in the world where men and women play in alternate groups on the same course, is usually sanctioned jointly by the European Men’s Tour and the Women’s LPGA Tour.

The Australian PGA Championship is also set to take place in Queensland from January 13-16.
