Megyn Kelly slammed for complaining about Naomi Osaka’s Sports Illustrated cover

Megyn Kelly is facing backlash after complaining on Twitter that Naomi Osaka was on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 2021 Swimsuit Issue.

The former Fox News host tried unsuccessfully to link the tennis superstar’s recent magazine appearances to her decision to withdraw from the Roland Garros and Wimbledon tournaments in the spring, citing the need to protect their sanity.

Kelly began by responding to a Tweeter from right-wing sports commentator Clay Travis who said, “Ever since she said she was too introverted to talk to the media after tennis matches, Naomi Osaka started a reality show, A Barbie, and is now on the cover SI swimsuit number.

“Let’s not forget the cover of (& interview in) Vogue Japan and Time Mag! Kelly responded, referring to Osaka’s appearances on the covers of the August issue of Vogue Japan and Time earlier this month. (Kelly left out that Osaka also graced the cover of Vogue Hong Kong this month.)

Kelly’s attack was quickly condemned on Twitter, including a reprimand from the four-time Grand Slam champion herself.

Osaka reminded the former cable news host to “do better,” according to screenshot of a tweet deleted since. She also pointed out that she shot all of her covers last year – months before announcing in May that she would not be making any appearances in the press at this year’s Roland Garros.

“Since you are a journalist, I would have assumed that you would take the time to research what the deadlines are for magazines, if you had done that you would have found out that I had shot all of my covers last year,” said the tennis player. star reportedly tweeted. “Instead, your first reaction is to come up here and spit out some negativity, do better Megan.”

Kelly seemed embarrassed by the reactions to her comments and then rang out that Osaka had blocked her on Twitter. “Poor [Naomi Osaka] blocked me by shooting me (I guess it’s only hard on the courts), ”she tweeted.

Many people have come to Osaka’s defense, accusing the 50-year-old of harassing the 23-year-old athlete.

Osaka has openly discussed his mental health issues. She posted a statement on Instagram in May saying she had “suffered from long periods of depression” since the US Open in 2018.

“Megyn, making fun of someone who has dared to publicly admit that they are struggling with a mental illness is a dangerous game and can harm countless other people you will never know. Please stop this, ”wrote USA Today columnist Connie Schultz.

Others have stepped in to criticize Kelly for his relentless attacks:

People on Twitter also called out Kelly for her fixation on Osaka, who is Haitian and Japanese, and berated the former Fox News host for her story of racist comments.

Kelly, who moved to NBC News after leaving Fox News in 2017, was fired from NBC in 2018 after advocating for the use of blackface in Halloween costumes during a segment of her show “Megyn Kelly Today” .

Kelly too started an argument on Twitter with Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and creator of “1619 Project” over the weekend, prompting Twitter users to speak out against Kelly’s attacks on prominent black women.

“Your obsession with successful black women is strange but not surprising. Hope you find a job soon, ”author Roxane Gay tweeted.

Osaka, meanwhile, celebrated her Sports Illustrated cover on Instagram on Monday, writing that she is the first Haitian and Japanese woman to cover the magazine’s swimsuit issue, due out in August.
