DES MOINES, Iowa — Lottery officials raised the Mega Millions grand prize to $790 million on Friday, giving players a shot at what would be the fourth-biggest jackpot in the nation.

The next draw is Tuesday. The jackpot got so big because there hasn’t been a winner for three months. Those 27 consecutive draws with no one matching all six numbers allowed the jackpot to gradually grow from its starting point of $20 million in April.

The $790 million pre-tax prize highlighted is for a winner who takes an annuity option, paid in 30 annual installments. Most players choose the cash option, which for Friday’s draw would be $464.4 million.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states as well as Washington, DC and the US Virgin Islands. Gambling is overseen by state lottery officials.
