Meet the Emmaus Grandma Who Chuckles, Shares Smiles Everywhere She Goes | Lehigh Valley Regional News

EMMAUS, PA – Easter is an Emmaus native’s favorite holiday, and it’s easy to see or hear why.

“This is from Kara, my granddaughter,” Emmaus’ Connie Moyer said of one of her towel racks. “Here are the Easter eggs.”

Moyer’s house is full of chicken and eggs.

“Look, eggs. See, the Easter Bunny,” Moyer said, just as she began to giggle.

The 78-year-old clucks like a chicken everywhere she goes. It all started in the late 1980s when she started working with chickens on her sister’s farm.

“One of his hens, White Leghorn hens, jumped on my cart, and I just started clucking. It just came out of me like that,” Moyer said.

Moyer quickly understood the chuckle. No practice was necessary.

She finished as the national chuckling chicken champion four years in a row.

“It’s the very first year I’ve won the contest, it was 1990,” Moyer said, pointing to one of his trophies.

Moyer’s favorite song is the “chicken dance”.

She recently rocked the crowd at her granddaughter’s wedding.

The tunes she chuckles are endless. Among the most popular are “Happy Birthday” and “Jingle Bells”.

Everyone around Emmaus knows her, some of them since her 12 years as a performer Henrietta the Dancing Chicken.

“It was so exciting,” Moyer said with a laugh.

She still has the basket she brought to events.

“I put little toys, little eggs here, plastic eggs, with the treats for the kids,” Moyer said.

Moyer brightens days in stores, parks and restaurants.

“I giggle for my doctor, my eye doctor, my gynecologist,” Moyer said. “I do it.”

“A lot of people know her and recognize her,” said Susan Voortman, Moyer’s sister.

Why is she doing exactly that?

“Smile. Make people happy. Happiness. I love people,” Moyer said.

“That’s the best part,” Voortman said. “She makes people happy and that’s what she loves to do.”

That’s what she will continue to do.

“I’m an old chuckle but still feel like a spring chicken,” Moyer said. “I’m so grateful to everyone over the years.”
