“Maybe I’ll dust it off someday” – Lennox Lewis recalls victory over Mike Tyson and reveals he still has the epic victory ring in 2002

Lennox Lewis has revealed he still has the ring he fought and knocked out Mike Tyson in 20 years ago.

On June 8, 2002, the two icons of heavyweight boxing finally stepped into the ring after many years of trying.

Before the fight even started, security guards formed a barrier to separate Tyson and Lewis due to the pre-fight press conference brawl that broke out between them.

Lewis, the last unified heavyweight champion of the world, dominated and stopped ‘Iron Mike’ in the eighth round of what turned out to be a mismatch in the bitter Memphis fight.

The Briton had plenty of reason to be scared due to Tyson’s violent attitude during the preparation, starting a fight at their press conference in New York and even threatening to eat Lewis’ children, although he didn’t have any at the time.

He didn’t have too much to fear in the end and his victory was convincing.

Lewis posted about the anniversary on his Instagram and revealed he still has the ring from that fight.

He wrote: “On this day in 2002 I stopped Mike Tyson in the 8th round to keep my #WBC, #IBO, Ring and Lineal.

“I knew I couldn’t retire without this fight happening, but because of Don King’s ‘politicricks’ at the time, I couldn’t make it when Tyson was champion and I was the contender. number 1, so I made it happen when I was champion.

“At the presser to announce that Lewis Tyson is on, Tyson punched my bodyguard which started a fight. In the chaos, Tyson bit me in the leg and very soon Lewis Tyson was left !

“The Nevada and New York boxing commissions have refused to let Tyson fight there and after many maneuvers and dealings, Lewis Tyson is back in Memphis, TN.

“It went down in history back then as the highest-grossing fight of all time and still remains the highest-grossing heavyweight fight of all time.

“We were both at the end of our caregivers, I only fought once more before retiring, I think Mike fought a little more before he hung up the gloves himself, but I think we both gave a good account and finally gave the audience what they wanted to see for many years.

“I still have the ring we fought in in storage. I might dust it off one day.

Despite the fire build-up, Lewis was told by his trainer – the legendary Manny Steward – that Tyson would be no problem.

Asked in an interview if he feared his opponent, whom he has known since adolescence, he replied in a 2020 interview: “Yes and no. Yes, because television made him look like King Kong.

“No, because Manny [Lewis’ trainer Emanuel Steward] always told me that Tyson would be my easiest fight.

“I would say, ‘Come on now. It’s going to be a bit difficult. But Manny said, ‘No. This is your easiest fight.
