There’s a toast a witness, then there’s what you want to call the histrionic performance. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) dealt with a House subcommittee until Thursday.
Jordan was so contemptuous that after going past his deadline (while still talking) Rep Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) Stepped in.
“Your time is up, sir,” she said sharply to Jordan. “You must respect the chair and close your mouth.”
The hearing was organized to discuss “a science-based approach” to ending the pandemic “quickly and safely”. In the minutes leading up to the above exchange, Jordan repeatedly accosted Dr.Anthony Fauci, demanding answers to deceptive questions, then speaking out loud to the country’s top infectious disease expert as he was trying to answer it.
Jordan really only asked one question, despite being buried in theaters and going through multiple iterations. After each one, he cut Fauci off as he tried to answer. Here is a small representative sample of the whole:
Jordan: “When is it time? When will Americans regain their freedom? “
Fauci: “When the level of infections in this country is low enough that it is not really high -“
Jordan: “What is low enough? Give me a number. We had 15 days to slow the spread in a year of lost freedom. What parameters, what measures, what must happen before the Americans regain their freedoms? “
Fauci began to answer Jordan’s question, but was again interrupted by lawmakers.
Towards the end of the round trips, even the generally reserved Fauci seemed frustrated. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was trying to warn of the dangers of a fourth outbreak of COVID-19, with the country recording 60,000 infections a day, when Jordan – again – had it interrupted.
“I just want to know when Americans will regain their First Amendment freedoms,” Jordan interjected.
“I think you make it a personal thing and you don’t,” Fauci replied.
“It’s not a personal thing,” Jordan asserted, “it -“
“You are,” Fauci said firmly, cutting him off. “This is exactly what you are doing.”
“My recommendations are not a personal recommendation,” Fauci added later. “It is based on the CDC guidelines, which are underlined -“
Jordan then cut him off once more, to ask him the same question he had interrupted the answer to several times before. “And I ask the questions!” he apologized. “What steps must be taken before the Americans reclaim their First Amendment freedoms?”
More than 564,000 Americans have now died from COVID-19, just 16,000 fewer than the entire population of Wyoming.
