Mauricio Pochettino’s praise for Donny van de Beek when he was Tottenham boss shows why the pair could be made in heaven at Manchester United

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking was good news for Donny van de Beek, the Dutchman will be excited about Manchester United’s pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino as a first-choice replacement.

The exit of Baby-Faced Assassin may have given the midfielder a golden opportunity to finally break through as a first-team player at Old Trafford.

Before his second-half introduction in Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Watford, the Dutchman had played just 16 minutes of Premier League football with few opportunities to impress for the playmaker.

He scored just five minutes after entering half-time, but was powerless to prevent a humiliation for his side at Vicarage Road, which ultimately saw Soslkjaer sacked from his role.

United fans are now hopeful that Van de Beek can launch a successful career at Old Trafford – and he will be delighted to know that the current favorite for the post is a big admirer of his talent.

talkSPORT understands that Mauricio Pochettino is extremely interested in working at United and could even quit his post at Parc des Princes mid-season if he offered the hotseat.

And while Solskjaer didn’t seem to like Van de Beek, Pochettinho – currently a 5/2 shot to occupy the post – became lyrical about the player following Spurs’ Champions League loss to Ajax in 2019.

After scoring the winner in the first leg, Pochettino hailed Van de Beek as the star of their eleven, which included Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Hakim Ziyech – who went on to join Juventus, Barcelona and Chelsea, respectively.

Poch’s side would later beat the Dutch giants in dramatic fashion in the second leg – before losing the final to Liverpool – but the Argentine’s admiration for Van de Beek was certainly notable at the time.

He said, “Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him. But he has a dynamic in the game, he places himself behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals.

“Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of how this Ajax works is Van de Beek. I really like.

“They have a young player, from the academy, in each row, who shows what the team is.”

The spectacular semi-final victory over Ajax may have been the highlight of Poch’s career with Spurs in what has been a brilliant stint in north London.

The 49-year-old, however, finds his new job in France less rewarding.

It is understood that he is not happy with his lack of control over transfers to Paris Saint-Germain, with sporting director Leonardo in charge of transactions in the market.

He would therefore be open to a return to the Premier League after only ten months in post in Paris.
