Gaetz has repeatedly and vigorously denied the allegations, saying they are nothing more than a DOJ “witch hunt”.
Gaetz’s investigation began over a year ago when his longtime ally Joel Greenberg, a former Florida tax collector, was charged with a host of crimes, including sex trafficking of a minor – the same girl Gaetz is accused of abusing.
As the federal government investigated Greenberg, the alleged victim of sex trafficking told them that Gaetz also had sex with her at one point, a source familiar with the matter told the outlet.
Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend, who was in an open relationship with the Tory between 2017 and 2018, is a crucial voice in the investigation as the couple spoke frequently about their dates with other women, and her testimony could help investigators fill in the gaps in the story, the outlet said.
She also traveled with Gaetz and other young women to the Bahamas in 2018, a trip which is also part of the investigation, Politico previously reported.
Once Gaetz’s investigation began, he spoke to the ex in a three-way phone call with another woman who at the time was already cooperating with federal investigators and was sneaking the call, said to the media of sources close to the case.
It was during this call that the ex and Gaetz allegedly obstructed justice, but it is not immediately clear how.
The ex-girlfriend is replaced by Tim Jansen, a prominent Florida lawyer known for making immunity deals.
Gaetz and Jansen did not return requests for comment.
