Matt Gaetz: Federal investigators review Bahamas trip

The investigation includes a review of a trip to the Bahamas and whether the women were paid to travel for sex with the Florida Republican congressman and others, a potential federal crime, the sources said.

CNN previously reported that investigators also looked into allegations that Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old minor at the time and other women who had been provided with drugs and money. in violation of the laws on sex trafficking and prostitution.

Gaetz’s lawyers declined to comment.

CBS News, which first reported on the trip to the Bahamas, was told by a spokesperson: “Representative Gaetz never paid for sex and he never had sex with a minor. What started as headlines about “sex trafficking” has now turned into a general fishing exercise on vacations and consensual adult relationships. “

Investigators are considering Gaetz’s dealings with several associates in Florida who may have benefited politically in return for providing the congressman with benefits including escorts, travel and campaign donations, the sources say.

The investigation includes witness claims and other evidence that Gaetz may have used money and drugs in his dealings with young women, CNN previously reported.

No charges were brought against Gaetz.

The Gaetz investigation arose out of a review by Gaetz’s partner, Joel Greenberg, a former Florida County tax collector. Greenberg was indicted last year on allegations of criminal harassment, harassment of a political opponent, wire fraud, creation of false identification and charges of sex trafficking. He has pleaded not guilty and is due in court Thursday afternoon.

Investigators believe Greenberg recruited several women online for sex and introduced the women – who received payments – to Gaetz, people familiar with the investigation said.

Gaetz has also denied these allegations. In a Washington Examiner editorial this week, Gaetz said, “I never, ever paid for sex. And second, as a grown man, I haven’t slept with a 17-year-old.”

CNN’s Paula Reid and David Shortell contributed to this report.
