Mason Mount’s penalty miss extends Wembley’s final curse with a SIXTH consecutive defeat in FA Cup loss to Liverpool – but the Chelsea man backed to bounce back

Mason Mount’s final curse at Wembley continued with six defeats in six appearances as the Chelsea midfielder missed a key penalty in an FA Cup shootout loss to Liverpool.

It was another day under the arch to forget for Mount, whose shot into the arms of Alisson Becker allowed Kostas Tsimikas to end the suspicious affair with the final kick of the match.

The 23-year-old looked heartbroken as Liverpool went off to celebrate, but the feeling is nothing new for Mount.

In fact, it’s his third defeat at Wembley in less than a year, having suffered a similar trauma with England, and much earlier in his career with Derby.

Former Chelsea player Andy Townsend told talkSPORT: “A lot has happened for Mason in a very short time – he has a lot of years ahead of him.

“He’ll have to take this one on the chin and he’ll bounce back, he’s that kind of boy.”

Mount tasted success at England’s National Stadium, winning the semi-finals, but when it comes to the crunch, his luck has run out.

One of football’s greatest young talents, Mount enjoyed his greatest triumph in Europe, feeding Kai Havertz for the Champions League winner last summer.

But that experience hasn’t put him in good stead domestically, with talkSPORT here to take you through Mount’s other finals at Wembley Stadium and what went wrong.

2019 Championship Play-Off Final – Aston Villa 2-1 Derby

Mount’s first experience of a final at Wembley came during his successful loan spell with Derby County.

Despite scoring 10 goals and six assists during the season, it wasn’t enough to help the Rams secure promotion to the Premier League under Frank Lampard.

He had the opportunity to work his way into Lampard’s plans next season when he took charge of Chelsea, but it would be the first taste of Mount’s final disappointment at Wembley.

2020 FA Cup Final – Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea

Few expected Mount to prove himself at Chelsea after his successful loan spell with Derby, but he did just that in Lampard’s first season in charge.

Eight goals and six assists in all competitions was a decent tally for his first year in the Premier League, but sadly the Blues were left without silverware after finishing fourth in the league and failing in the FA Cup.

They faced Arsenal behind closed doors at Wembley and were beaten by a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

FA Cup Final 2021 – Chelsea 0-1 Leicester

Just 12 months later, Chelsea found themselves with another shot at the silverware.

Unfortunately, it was a familiar story as Mount and the Blues failed to finish the season trophyless.

Despite being favorites against Leicester, a Yuri Tielemans effort robbed the midfielder of glory at Wembley, but another opportunity was imminent.

Euro 2020 Final – Italy 1-1 England (Italy win on penalties)

In the confusingly named Euro 2020, the year 2021 also saw Mount take to the Wembley pitch in the European champions final.

Mount was a shining light as England had the whole country dreaming of what could have been, including watching Luke Shaw put Gareth Southgate’s side ahead after just two minutes.

Unfortunately, Italy found a way back into the game and beat England in the oh, so family penalty shootout format.

Carabao Cup Final 2022 – Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool (Liverpool win on penalties)

The Blues showed another ruthless streak under Thomas Tuchel after winning the Champions League last season, but it wasn’t enough to see them cross the line in the Coupe de la Ligue.

Chelsea faced Liverpool at Wembley for the first trophy of the season but unfortunately for them it was Klopp’s side who prevailed through a penalty shootout.

Mount will be hoping to finally secure a final at Wembley when they face Liverpool in the FA Cup final, but based on this result there is no doubt they will have a tough test ahead of them.
