Adrian Durham has made no secret of his admiration for Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood in the past.
Greenwood, 19, was included in Gareth Southgate’s 33-player England provisional squad for Euro 2020 after a blistering end to the season.
The youngster has scored eight times in his last 13 appearances to earn a welcome reprieve from Three Lions boss Southgate.
Greenwood found himself in hot water with Southgate last September after being fired home from international service, along with Phil Foden, for violating COVID-19 regulations at the team hotel in Iceland.
Greenwood, who was not selected for international service in March, was told by Southgate that ‘the past is absolutely in the past’ following his previous indiscretions as he sought to be named in his last team of 26 men.
But not everyone is a huge Greenwood fan, with West Ham fan James expressing shock at the forward’s admission to the car on Tuesday.
“I was a little surprised to see Mason Greenwood in the squad, just in the sense that he hasn’t beaten everyone this season. I don’t really think he lived through all the hype… ”
Drive co-host Darren Gough replied, “He’s been doing the last eight or nine weeks, I think he’s been pretty special!
James added, “He’s had his moments. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he’s a bad player… but look at players like Michail Antonio for example.
“Without his injuries, he probably would have eclipsed Greenwood and could play just about anywhere.”
Durham couldn’t quite believe what he was hearing and made a firm defense of Greenwood’s inclusion – insisting he simply needs to be included in the Southgate Euro 2020 squad.
“I’m amazed. Antonio was a bit unlucky – I’ll give you that,” Durham explained.
“But I look at Mason Greenwood, the talent he has, the way he plays, what he brings… wow I’m amazed someone thinks he shouldn’t be in this conversation.”
“He had goals galore, I know the statistics divide people and some people go with them.
“Premier League goal implications for Mason Greenwood? 17. He’s the second best Under-21 player – Phil Foden is obviously the first.
“But he’s ahead of any foreign Under-21 player like [Kai] Havertz, [Ferran] Torres. His numbers rise at the end of the day
“But even like me, if you look at how a player plays, Mason Greenwood is absolutely the real deal.
“It’s scary to think how good he could be in about five years, it blows my mind.
“He has already made over 100 appearances for Man United. This kid is the real deal. I think he must be part of the 26-player squad.
And Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor was in full agreement with Durham when she gave her reaction to the provisional Southgate team on talkSPORT 2.
Greenwood was chosen from the likes of Danny Ings and Patrick Bamford for Gareth Southgate’s provisional team of 33.
“If Harry Kane were to get injured I will play Greenwood as a forward,” Agbonlahor said.

“If the ball lands in that box, there’s only one person you want in there other than Kane, and that’s Greenwood.”
“He’s proven that in his last ten games, every shot on target, in the corner, with right or left foot, is what you need in tournaments.
“If you need a goal in the last ten minutes, who do you bring?” Greenwood. You’re not bringing Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
“For me it makes sense to take Greenwood. He’s not scared since joining this Man United squad.
“He’ll be taking pictures when he can switch to Marcus Rashford or Bruno Fernandes, because he has that good arrogance about him.
