Football is temporarily suspended at two high schools in Maryland after a major fight broke out during a game on Friday night, resulting in additional fights with injuries.
The Gaithersburg Trojans were hosting the North West Jaguars when players on the field began to fight during the third quarter, FOX 5 DC reported. Officials ended the game early and declared Northwest, who was leading 14-0, the winner. Both schools are in the Montgomery County Public Schools District.
In a Facebook post, Gaithersburg police said officers from their department and Montgomery County police responded to a call reporting a fight at the high school around 8:23 p.m.
As officers spoke about the scuffle on the field, school officials said there were “several scuffles” involving a few students outside the stadium.

An unidentified officer was also assaulted during the incident, but did not require medical attention.
Montgomery County police said a person armed with a knife was arrested along with “a few individuals” suspected of involvement in the fighting. Authorities said all would be charged accordingly.

The Montgomery County Public Schools System issued the following statement Saturday “strongly condemning” what happened the previous night:
“Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) strongly condemns the abhorrent and unacceptable behavior that occurred during last night’s football game – Friday, September 16, 2022 – between Northwest and Gaithersburg at Gaithersburg High School. The District is moving quickly to develop and implement enhanced safety measures at any sporting event and will communicate these to our community in the coming days.
“As agreed to by MCPS and both schools, all football operations at these two schools will be temporarily suspended, to assist in the ongoing investigation. The District will pursue disciplinary action against anyone who may have participated in this major altercation, while working to bring communities together around the importance of maintaining safe and respectful environments.”
