Marten de Roon posts hilarious ‘holiday pic’ as Atalanta midfielder pokes fun at football’s social media generation

Marten de Roon has hilariously poked fun at his professional colleagues by posting “a vacation photo” on his social media.

The Atalanta star, known in England for his time at Middlesbrough in the 2016/17 season, is renowned for being one of the lightest footballers on social media as he pokes fun at himself with comic images and captions.

The Dutch international was in fine form again as he jibed lightly towards the other players in the game.

With the world’s biggest football stars sharing images of themselves lounging on a tanning bed or dining in a fancy restaurant during their summer holidays, De Roon offered a much more home-like take on those images.

Taking to social media, he posted a badly photoshopped photo of himself playing for Atalanta over a picture of a beach with palm trees.

The post was captioned: “My management told me to post a vacation pic so my Instagram doesn’t look formal with all the professional pics.

“So: nice holiday period. I can’t wait to come back and start the new season!”

To say her followers enjoyed the post was an understatement.

After joining Middlesbrough for £12m in 2016, the midfielder made 34 appearances for the club in a season that saw him suffer relegation from the Premier League.

Since then, he’s been part of Italian side Atalanta, where he’s been a regular in the Champions League, and helped the club to third place in Serie A in 2018/19.

Aside from his club form, De Roon has also represented the Netherlands on a regular basis. He has 28 caps for his country, playing alongside Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek and Memphis Depay.
