OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — The man convicted of the 2015 murder of a Hayward police sergeant has been sentenced to 50 years to life in prison, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office told ABC7 News on Thursday. .

Mark Estrada of Oakland has been charged with the murder of Sgt. Scott Lunger. Estrada, who was 21 at the time, fatally shot Lunger in the face during a traffic stop for a possible DUI. The prosecutor said Estrada was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs with a loaded gun.

The sergeant was a 15-year veteran of the force with two daughters, described as an incredible officer, supervisor and friend.

“Sergeant Lunger was the epitome of a good leader, an excellent officer, an incredible supervisor, mentor and friend. He is someone we all looked up to and miss. terribly,” said Cassondra Fovel, spokeswoman for the Hayward Police Department.
