Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) Upset critics on Tuesday when she burst into laughter when asked by a reporter about coronavirus deaths and its role in voter safety.
Greene held a press conference after being suspended from Twitter for 12 hours for spreading false information about COVID-19. In tweets on Sunday and Monday, she falsely claimed that COVID-19 is not dangerous for people unless they are obese or over the age of 65 and said vaccines should not be required.
Many people under the age of 65 have fallen seriously ill or died from the disease. Currently, 99% of deaths from COVID-19 are among the unvaccinated.
“Do you feel responsible for the safety of people in Georgia? Asked a reporter during the press conference. “There are children, skinny people, who have died from the coronavirus. Do you feel responsible?
“Tia, you crack me up,” she said. “You know what, I think the responsibility of the people is theirs. Read the information – and it’s everywhere. You hardly can walk around any corner and see nothing about COVID-19. I believe in the individual responsibility of people to read, to discover and to make their own decision.
The journalist, who later logged in online as Tia Mitchell, Washington correspondent for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, then asked the lawmaker if she believed in science.
“I believe in God. And of course there is science,” Greene replied. “I don’t worship science and I don’t think science rules everything. I believe God rules everything.
Mitchell said she asked the question after listening to Greene downplay the impact of COVID-19 on young people and those who are not obese.
Greene has consistently disseminated dangerous and patently bogus theories about vaccines and COVID-19, even as the delta variant increases across the country and causes a further rise in cases.
The lawmaker has been widely criticized online for her inappropriate laughter when asked about the lives and safety of her constituents.
“Dead Americans? Bursts out laughing. The face of the Republican Party ”, political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen tweeted.
Health care advocate Peter Morley said Greene was a “DISGRACE!”
Rep. Greene laughs about: ‘skinny people’ dying of # COVID19 Followed by ‘You crack me up’ he tweeted. “MILLIONS have died around the world as a result of this pandemic. Nobody laughs.
Greene did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
