Mariners win 13th in a row, lead Texas 3-2 in 10 innings

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — JP Crawford hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners extended their winning streak to 13 games, beating the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Saturday.

Carlos Santana homered as the Mariners (50-42) edged closer to the club record of 15 straight wins set in their final playoff season in 2001. They have won 21 of their last 24 games overall to win eight series straight, their most since winning 14 straight sets in that 116-win season 21 years ago.

Seattle would tie the longest winning streak at the majors this year with a victory in Sunday’s series finale, its last game before the All-Star break. Atlanta, the defending World Series champion, won 14 straight last month.

Crawford cut a one-out single on the line after first base against Brett Martin (0-5), who was Texas’ fifth pitcher and went the last two innings. That marked auto runner Sam Haggerty, who became a pinch runner for Santana, who had a late-inning game in the ninth.

Diego Castillo (7-1) faced just three batters in the ninth, benefiting from a double-play understudy after walking the leadoff batter. Matthew Festa hit the team in the 10th for his first save.

Crawford and Santana both returned to the Mariners roster. Crawford had missed two games with a bruised right index finger, and Santana was reinstated from the shortlist after being out of the club for a day following a fire at his Florida home.

Ty France, who had three more hits to bring his batting average to .306, scored a single in the third before Santana hit his eighth homer of the season to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead. France had a one-out double in the ninth, but their pinch runner got stuck on base.

Nathaniel Lowe, mired in a 4-for-26 slide, led second Texas with a double and scored on a single by Jonah Heim. Rangers tied the game in the seventh after another brace, this one by hot-hitting Leody Taveras, before Elier Hernandez hit a single for his first career RBI. Taveras hit .593 (16 of 27) with six doubles in a seven-game hitting streak.

It was Seattle’s seventh one-point victory in its current streak. The Mariners’ 21 one-point wins are tied with Toronto for the most in the majors. The Rangers are tied for the lead in the major leagues with 20 one-point losses. … All-Star SS Corey Seager had his first hat-trick with the Rangers, but saw the end of his career-best RBI streak at eight games. … There were no injuries in the Santana house fire. His family was in another house in Kansas City at the time.

Rangers: RHP Johnathan Hernandez was activated from the 60-day disabled list and pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout. He missed all of 2021 recovering from Tommy John’s surgery. RHP AJ Alexy was sent to Triple-A Round Rock.

RHP Chris Flexen (6-8, 3.84 ERA), who is 4-0 with a 2.53 ERA in five career starts against Texas, takes the mound for the Mariners in the final game before the star break. RHP Rangers rookie Glenn Otto (4-5, 5.50) has allowed no more than two runs in eight of his 12 total starts, but has allowed 10 earned runs in his last two home starts.
