Former England striker Darren Bent has dismissed any suggestion that Trent Alexander-Arnold is better than Reece James or Kyle Walker.
Liverpool right-back Alexander-Arnold had a night to forget as the Reds were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford by rivals Manchester United on Monday night.
The Red Devils appeared to be targeting Alexander-Arnold and the 23-year-old didn’t cover himself in glory for any of the goals.
Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this winter, the Liverpool full-back finds himself in fierce competition with Chelsea’s James, Man City’s Walker and Newcastle’s Kieran Tripper for a place alongside Gareth Southgate.
Although there is no doubt about Alexander-Arnold’s attacking qualities, questions continue to be asked about his defensive abilities – and Bent insists James and Walker are superior.
“Trent Alexander-Arnold, my God! Wow,” the former Premier League striker told talkSPORT.
“People will keep beating that drum saying he’s better than James and Walker. Absolutely not.
“Offensively, I will give it to him. His passing range, his distribution… but when you think about his distribution, it’s not much better than James.

“So look what James can do to some wide players. Look what he did to Heung-min Son.
“Of the three of them, Alexander-Arnold is the worst.
“Last night it was almost like Man United went after him. They attacked him on the left side.
Liverpool legend Dean Saunders echoed those thoughts and suggested Alexander-Arnold should be “discovered”, holding him responsible for a number of goals this season as the Reds seek their first win.
Saunders told talkSPORT: “Trent, I don’t know, for the first goal he gets a brace. Don’t get me wrong, go ahead [he’s] world class, but defensively, he is getting discovered. Aleksandar Mitrovic overtook him at Fulham.
“Vinicius Jr in the Champions League final does it at the far post. He gave away the ball for the goal against Palace and last night he ran to Elanga. He gets a brace then walks, comes to Sancho in the box.
“Virgil van Dijk should have gone out and shut the ball down, so it’s also partly his fault, but if Trent keeps running, he puts his foot down when he comes back inside.
“The second goal, he hits a diagonal into the box, loses it and he doesn’t sprint back. [Marcus Rashford] seemed offside to me, moreover, but it was not cheap. Gomez is left in the blocked channel.
