Australian rules football fans will be treated to a major friendly when English Premier League icons Manchester United and Crystal Palace take center stage at the MCG.

Manchester United will take part in two friendlies later this year, starting with a clash against A-League side Melbourne Victory on Friday July 15.

Then four days later, on July 19, the Red Devils take on EPL rivals Crystal Palace.

Both meetings are scheduled to take place at the MCG in Victoria.

“Our matches in Melbourne will be a wonderful opportunity for international fans to see their favorite players up close in an exciting match schedule,” Manchester United chief operating officer Collette Roche said.

The last time Manchester United toured Australia was in 2019 when they beat Perth Glory 2-0, as well as Leeds United 4-0.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said his club were delighted to make history with their first visit to Australia.

“We are absolutely delighted to be visiting Australia for the first time in the club’s history, especially as our two planned trips over the past pre-seasons have been postponed due to COVID,” said Parish.

“It will be fantastic to finally attend the Crystal Palace game in Australia, and to do so at the iconic MCG in front of our Australian fans and strong travel support is something that the entire team and staff, led by Patrick Vieira, are delighted.”

The Victorian government said the luminaries would give the state a giant boost to its local economy.

“Manchester United playing at the MCG will be a major asset in attracting visitors to Melbourne and encouraging locals to come to the city for the games,” said Employment Minister Jaala Pulford.

“The tour is expected to bring tens of thousands of visitors to the city, supporting jobs in our tourism, events and hospitality sectors.

“It’s a great opportunity to see one of the greatest sports teams in the world play in Melbourne, the country’s sporting capital.”
