Manchester United announce the loan signing of Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich after news of Christian Eriksen’s injury triggered a transfer U-turn

Manchester United have announced the loan signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Marcus Sabitzer.

The Red Devils entered talks with the Austria international after Christian Eriksen limped off in the FA Cup win over Reading on Saturday and will now miss three months of action with an ankle injury.

Boss Erik ten Hag previously downplayed the bringing in of a replacement but the Dutchman has now changed his mind.

Sabitzer was absent from Bayern training on Tuesday as he traveled to the UK to complete his move.

It is understood that Chelsea have shown late interest in Sabitzer with their big-money transfer for Enzo Fernandez on the line.

But Sabizzter opted to join the Red Devils for the remainder of the campaign.

“Sometimes in life you have to make quick and big decisions,” Sabitzer said.

“From the moment I heard about this opportunity I knew it was right for me. I am a competitive player; I want to win and help the club achieve their goals this season.

“I feel like I’m at my peak as a player and I can bring a lot of experience and energy to the team. I’m excited to start with my new teammates and manager and show my qualities to the fans of Manchester United.”

The Austria international has enjoyed a mixed campaign so far, having scored once in 15 appearances.

He has played a minor role for the Bundesliga side with just one minute of action in Bayern’s three games since resuming league duties after the World Cup.

Fans will remember Sabitzer’s star performance for former club RB Leipzig when he scored a brace to knock Tottenham out of the Champions League in March 2020.

With United in good form and on course to crack the top four, Ten Hag will want a full squad to choose from for their assault on domestic and European glory.
