Manchester United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted Harry Maguire has had “weaker moments” in recent games amid the Red Devils’ poor form.
United have led 1-0 at half time in their last three matches only to be caught after the break.
Second-half setbacks saw the Red Devils knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties by Middlesbrough and drop points in the Premier League with 1-1 draws at Burnley and Southampton.
United now enter their rearranged home clash with Brighton on Tuesday night, needing a win to move back into the top four.
And Rangnick conceded his captain has struggled to adapt to his methods as his centre-back feels more comfortable playing in a back-three.
Asked about Maguire’s form, the manager replied: “I think after coming back from injury he did extremely well. He put in a really good performance against West Ham.
“In the last two games he had weaker moments both against Southampton and when we conceded against Burnley.
“The way we play now is new for him because in the English national team he’s used to playing in a back-three and here at Manchester United in a back-four – but not as proactive with that kind of thing. defense when we try to be on the front foot.

Rangnick is clearly confident in his star but Darren Bent has joined talkSPORT and says the German could drop Maguire in order to draw attention away from his struggling defender.
“He hasn’t played well this season,” the former Tottenham striker told Breakfast.
“He came back to the England fold this summer after injury and did relatively well.
“I think if this continues, I think Ralf Rangnick might have to take him out of the line of fire.
“If he’s costing you goals, costing you points, it might be easier for Rangnick to get him out of the line of sight, but that’s easier said than done because if you get him out, you have to put someone in it.
