Man shot dead by police in East Garfield Park; 5 Taken Into Police Custody – NBC Chicago

A man was shot and killed by Chicago police Saturday night during a gunfight with officers outside a home in East Garfield Park, officials say.

Around 5 p.m., officers on patrol spotted a car wanted for evading a previous traffic stop and they tracked the vehicle to the 600 block of North Central Park Avenue, where the driver pulled into a garage , then walked to the back porch of a home while holding a gun, police said.

Officers confronted the man and said he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon, which led them to open fire, police say.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but was expected to survive, police said.

None of the officers were injured, but they were taken to hospital for observation, police said.

Five people, including the man who was shot, have been taken into custody in connection with the incident, but no charges have been announced. Two firearms were recovered from the scene, police said.

The officers involved will be placed in administrative duties for 30 days while the shooting is investigated by the Civilian Police Accountability Office.

A spokesperson for the watchdog agency did not return calls for comment on Saturday.
